Cyclodextrins As Auxiliary Substances
The b-cyclodextrin is a homogeneous, crystalline non-hygroscopic substance of high purity, both in the chemical and microbiological sense. With a further decrease in the price of b-cyclodextrin its use as a substitute for starch, lactose, talc or microcrystalline cellulose, even without the formation of inclusion complexes, is conceivable. In such cases, on dissolving the cyclodextrin in water, some type of interaction between it and a drug can almost always be detected. The complex forming ability is of negligible importance when the rapidly swelling, insoluble polymers are used. These polymers, particularly a copolymer of b-cyclodextrin with tetraethyleneglycol possess excellent tablet disintegrating properties.
